Sandra Vane who runs the Publicity , bookstall and events team for the Kent Family History Society , kindly brought her team to Ramsgate Traincrew Room to help our members with their Family History . We used the Internet to trace and verify the Family tree brought in by Colin Sutton . His family history centers around the Deal and Ringwould area , and went back around 300 years . The Ladies also helped Karl Rodgers who is the Lead Learner Rep for the TSSA on Southeastern , to find the birth places and dates of some of his family . Karls family come from Wales , but with their knowledge of the various web sites they use , was no problem .
Sandra,s team also gave advice on how to store documents such as Birth , marriage and Death certificates . They recomend using acid free document bags . These dont attack the paper over time keeping it in good condition over many years . Also they are air tight which helps preserve them too .
One member of Traincrew we spoke to was about to emigrate to Australia . He wanted advice about what he should do to keep a record of his family, s life in this country . Sandra said to take as many family certificates as he could , but also to take lots of photos of everything from members of his family to photos of his house and surrounding area , so when his children grow up they will have a good idea of their early life in Kent .

A SLICE OF LEARNING HELD AT THE RED STAR LEARNING CENTRE CHATHAM

Image:

To round off our week of events we were honoured to welcome National Organiser Andy Reed to the Red Star Learning Centre at Chatham . Andy saw the learners taking their assesments [ me included ] and had a tour of the centre to see the very impressive facillites on offer . Mike Sargent and Ivor Riddlle of the RMT and Karl Rodgers of TSSA have worked their socks off to get this Learning centre up and running . Andy also recorded a message for our Video which Karl is producing that records all the activites Learner Reps have put on during Adult Learners Week .
